Nuclear moderator grade graphite is carbon that has been cleaned to remove other contaminating elements such as boron, heavy metals, etc. Will graphite kill you? Excessive exposure to graphite dust over extended periods of time can cause a chronic and more serious condition known as Graphitosis, which is a form of pneumoconiosis. This condition arises when inhaled particles of graphite are retained in the lungs and bronchi.
Lead is toxic, or poisonous, to people if it gets inside the body. How does lead make children sick? Lead can damage many organs, especially the nervous system, brain, and kidneys. It can interfere with normal brain development, causing reduced IQ, learning disabilities, behavior problems, and hearing problems. Pencil leads can be made softer through the addition of clay or by the omission of wax.
Soft leads are smooth to write and draw with. They smudge easily, but are readily erased. If the object that caused the puncture is small and you can easily remove it, do so. Apply firm, direct pressure with sterile gauze or clean cloth until bleeding stops.
Rinse the wound under clean water for several minutes. Lead is a potent, systemic poison that serves no known useful function once absorbed by your body.
Taken in large enough doses, lead can kill you in a matter of days. A condition affecting the brain called acute encephalopathy may arise which develops quickly to seizures, coma, and death from cardiorespiratory arrest. Swallowing or breathing in lead causes lead poisoning.
Lead harms children between the ages of 0 and 6 years old. If a child draws on their skin with a pencil or other marker, wash it off with soap and water. Do not scrub to try to get it off — the scrubbing itself could hurt the skin. If someone is stabbed by a pencil, wash the area with soap and water and cover with a band aid.
A doctor will probably need to see deep stab wounds that go further than the skin, and any that are close to the eyes.
